Navigating Slippery Roads: Winter Driving Tips

Winter is in full swing and many drivers are experiencing bad driving conditions. Unfortunately, we’ve seen a rise in motor vehicle collisions and accidents in the last few weeks. In order to prevent more accidents from occurring, we want to share some tips for commercial drivers to keep in mind while driving during winter weather:

-

Slow down and maintain a safe following distance. Snow and ice can make roads slippery and reduce visibility, so it’s important to give yourself extra time to react to any changes in road conditions.

-

Use lower gears when driving up or down hills. This will help you maintain traction and control on slippery roads.

-

Use your brakes gently to avoid skidding. If you do start to skid, take your foot off the brake and steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.

-

Keep your vehicle well-maintained. Make sure your brakes, tires, and windshield wipers are in good condition before setting out on a trip.

-

Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle. This should include items such as a flashlight, blanket, extra warm clothing, and non-perishable food.

-

Plan your route carefully. Avoid taking shortcuts or unfamiliar roads, and check the weather forecast and road conditions before you set out.

-

Stay alert and stay rested. Driving in winter weather can be tiring, so take breaks as needed and make sure you get enough sleep before setting out on a long trip.
